| The strappado was an extreme form of torture extensively practiced in mainland Europe. The hands of the accused person were tied behind their back. They were then attached to pulleys and hoisted to the ceiling. Heavy weights were sometimes attached to their legs or feet to increase the pain and injury. Dislocation of shoulders and other joints were common consequences of this form of torture. The procedure was often combined with thumbscrews to increase agony. | ||||||||||||||||
