Squassation
The squassation torture method was an extreme form of the strappado. It was used on accused witches who had refused to surrender and confess under any other style of torture. The squassation consisted of the same initial process as the strappado as being bound, hoisted above the ground by pulleys and having weights attached the limbs. However, the pulley ropes would suddenly be released, sending the victim crashing to the ground before their fall is suddenly and violently brought to a halt as the ropes are tightened. People treated with this form of torture were extremely lucky to escape without dislocated bones.
