The garotte was a torture device used to stop the suffering of a man who had been broken on the Wheel, or on a witch before being burnt at the stake. The instrument was a long upright wooden post with a hole bored through it. The accused then stood or, if lucky, sat on a seat in front of the post. They then had a length of string or metal fastened around their neck and then the ends of the rope were pulled through the bored hole. This string could be pulled at to strangle the accused. A metal knife or spike was sometimes also drilled into the back of the accuseds neck, parting the vertebrae and causing a painful death. |
