Dunking Stool
This type of torture was used mainly in America for witches and in Britain for prostitutes, troublemakers and minor offenses. The dunking stool was mainly used on women. The accused witch was bound to the chair and then the chair was attached to a dipping teeter-totter type of contraption. The chair was then violently dunked into a local river or lake and could be left underwater for 5 minutes or more. Many elderly women died instantly from the shock of the cold waters. The dunking could last only a few minutes or could continue for days, according to the ruthlessness of the investigators.
