Cleansing the Soul
In Catholic countries it was thought that the soul of an accused witch was filthy, corrupt and bedeviled by all things evil. They cleansed the accused witch before they were punished by forcing them to consume searing hot objects such as coal, fire brands, scalding water or even soap. The term today of washing your mouth out with soap is a direct descendant of this method of torture.
