It was believe that by burning a witch their powers would be destroyed as their blood was burnt, hence burning at the stake. In Scotland witches were burnt by various means usually at the stake or in a tar barrel that was then set alight. If a victim tried to get out onlookers were there to push them back in. It was recorded in Scotland trials that a burning consumed 16 loads of peat plus wood and coal, the bill for the execution fitted by the victim of coarse. |
