Boots
The torture known as the boots was also know as Spanish boots, bootikins and cashielaws. The boots were a stretching instrument used to break bones and tear flesh and muscle. The device consisted of a length of wood bound together lengthways with cord and fitted to the legs of the accused from ankle to knee. As the device was either gradually tightened by hand or was knocked violently together with a wooden mallet the area between the wedges got smaller and began to close on the leg, with the wedges entering the flesh and crushing bones. This form of torture often left the legs incapable to ever walk again.
