Beltane 2000
Written by Foxglove
Note: Since the only participants were Blackwood and Foxglove, we've decided that this was the first Silver Branch coven ritual.

The coven gather and grounds then takes a group breath (these will be explained).

Preparing the Sacred Space

Cleanse the circle by walking around it, sprinkling it with salt-water. Stop at each quarter and say: With salt and water, I cleanse the East (South, West, North).

Charge the circle by walking around it, swinging the censer of incense and saying: With fire and air, I charge the East (South, West, North).

Cast the circle by walking around it deosil, saying these or similar words: I hereby cast this sacred Sabbat circle in the names of the Lady and the Lord of Spring.

Invocation of the Elements

Begin in the East, invoking the spirit of Air, saying:
Soft breezes blow forth now
Greetings be unto thee
In the names of the
Maiden and Lord of Spring,
We call Your presence!

The Eastern candle is then lit.

Move to the South, invoking the spirit of Fire, saying:
Flaming Beltane fires come forth
Greetings be unto thee
In the names of the
Maiden and Lord of Spring,
We call Your presence!

The Southern candle is then lit.

Move to the West, invoking the spirit of Water, saying:
Cool waters of the sea
Greetings be unto thee
In the names of the
Maiden and Lord of Spring,
We call Your presence!

The Western candle is then lit.

Move to the North, invoking the spirit of Earth, saying:
Earth of meadows and forests deep
Greetings be unto thee
In the names of the
Maiden and Lord of Spring,
We call Your presence!

The Northern candle is then lit.

Invocation of the Goddess and the God

Invoke the Goddess, saying:
Lovely Maiden, Mother, Wise One,
Threefold Goddess be
A flame in our hearts tonight
That grows in energy.
Fill us with Your magick light.
Come to the Beltane fire,
And share our joy this night.

The Goddess candle is now lit.

Invoke the God, saying:
Young Sun King, Horned One,
Spirit wild and free,
Come dance with the Maiden of Spring.
Fill us with Your magick light.
Come to the Beltane fire,
And share our joy this night.

The God candle is now lit. p>Lighting of the Beltane Fire
(This is only for symbolism and ritual purposes, as the fire will already be lit at this point.)

Light a twig in the altar candle and throw it onto the fire, saying:
Our Lord has reached the end of his journey,
To find the lady waiting for Him, with warmth and comfort.
Joy and abundance fills the Earth.
Let us celebrate the planting of abundance,
The turning of the Wheel,
The season of the Lady.
Let us say farewell to the darkness
And cry greetings to the Light.
The wheel turns and we move ever on.

Now coveners write down their wishes, blessings, prayers, and so forth on small slips of green construction paper. Fold them and cast them into the Beltane Fire. Say these or similar words:

Sacred fire, blazing so bright,
Accept this offering to your light.
Burn into ash,
Burn into smoke,
Beltane fire,
I invoke you!

All dance around and/or jump over the fire, chanting:
Sacred Beltane fires burn,
Light the way for Suns return.
Winters darkness now must end,
The great wheel of life has turned again!

Coveners now sit around the fire to practice pyromancy.

Cakes and Ale As the cup is to the female, so the athame is to the male,
And conjoined they become one in truth.

Hold up the cakes, as [a second covener] draws a pentagram over them. [Then] say:
All fruits of the Earth are fruits of Your union,
Lady and Lord, we thank You for Your blessings and abundance.

Farewells

Thank the Goddess, saying:
Maiden of Spring, Mother, Wise One,
We offer You thanks,
Honor and Love.
Hail and farewell.

The Goddess candle is now extinguished.

Thank the God, saying:
Young Sun King, Horned One,
We offer You thanks,
Honor and Love.
Hail and farewell.

The God candle is now extinguished.

Thank the East, saying:
Warm soft winds,
Our blessings go with you.
Hail and farewell.

The Eastern candle is now extinguished.

Thank the South, saying:
Bright fires of Beltane,
Our blessings go with you.
Hail and farewell.

The Southern candle is now extinguished.

Thank the West, saying:
Cool waters of the sea,
Our blessings go with you.
Hail and farewell.

The Western candle is now extinguished.

Thank the North, saying:
Earth of meadows and forests deep,
Our blessings go with you.
Hail and farewell.

The Eastern candle is now extinguished.

Ring the bell three times.
The circle is open, but unbroken.
Merry do we meet, merry may we part,
And merry may we meet again!
