Dark Moon Ritual, June 2002
Written by Foxglove

Preparing the Sacred Space
The coven gathers, grounds, and takes a group breath.

This is the ending before the beginning, the death before new life. Now on the ebb tide the secrets of the shoreline are uncovered by the retreating waves. The Moon is hidden, but the faintest of stars are revealed and those who have eyes to see may read the fates and know the mysteries. In the most vast silence and stillness, all is possible. We meet in the time of the Crone, to touch the deep power of the dark.

Dana:
Lights the lamp of art, and says, The fire is lit, the ritual has begun.

Wolfwings: Salt-water purification.
Take up the chalice of water and say, Blessed be thou creature of water. Then, take up the bowl of salt and say, Blessed be thou creature of Earth. Using your athame, mix the salt and water together in the chalice.

Go to each of the four quarters, starting with the North, and say, With salt and water, I cleanse the North (East, South, West).

Firecrow: Charging with fire and air.
Take up the incense burner, sprinkling fresh incense on the charcoal, saying, Blessed be thou creature of fire and air. Take it around the circle, starting in the north, saying, With fire and air, I charge the North (East, South, West).

Blackwood: Casting the circle.
Starting and ending in the North, walk deosil around the circle, casting it with these or similar words: I do hereby cast this sacred circle on this sacred night of Hecate, the night of the dark moon. We are now between the worlds, beyond the bounds of time, where night and day, birth and death, joy and sorrow, meet as one.

Invocation of the Elements
Foxglove invokes the Elements while Firecrow assists.

Invocation of the Gods

Dana: Invoke the Goddess.
Hail Brigit, Maiden Bright,
Waxing Moon and growing light.
Hail Cerridwen, sacred Mother,
Under full moon meets her lover.
Hail Hecate, magicks power,
Darkened Moon, Witches hour.
We now invoke the sacred Three,
As we will, so mote it be.

Wolfwings: Invoke the God.
Hail Pan, son of Earth,
Light of heart and full of mirth.
Hail Kernunnos, Horned One,
Guards the night and greets the Sun,
Hail Oghma, bard divine,
Fate revealed in song and rhyme.
We now invoke the sacred Three,
As we will, so mote it be.

Ritual

Journey to meet your spirit guide.

Now that we are in a relaxed state, spend some time thinking about qualities of yourself that contradict one another. Do not be overly judgmental; these qualities can be good or bad. You may write these down if you wish. You may also name these two halves or give them symbols. In your mind, merge the two halves together until they become one. See how it is all part of the one that is you.

Now take a cookie. If you have named or created a symbol for your halves, you may want to draw it on the cookie. Realize that as you eat the cookie, you are symbolically accepting both halves of yourself, both the dark and the light.

Raise power as necessary.

Consecrate tools as necessary.

Cakes and Ale

Wolfwings takes up the cup, and Blackwood takes her athame. Blackwood puts the blade into the cup, and says:
As the athame is to the male, so the cup is to the female; and conjoined, they bring blessings.

Foxglove takes up the wand and Dana the cakes as Foxglove says:
May this food nourish our bodies as the Gods nourish our souls.

The food and drink is then shared around the circle.

Farewells

Wolfwings: steps to the altar and says:
The flame is extinguished.
She blows out the flame.
The ritual is done.

All:
Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again!

Blackwood knocks three times on the altar.
