Enteritis
Enteritis, to put it simply, means inflammation of the bowel or intestinal lining. What normally happens is the peristatic waves that pass along the intestinal wall go faster than normal, so the glands in the wall of the intestine secrete an excess fluid and the wall does not absorb the usual amount of fluid because it doesn't have the chance.
Symptoms include spasmodic pain and diarrhea. Causes can be any of the following: bacterial, dietic (eat moldy hay, bran, or oats), chemical, vegetable (toxic plants), and as well as unknown causes.
Treatment for Enteritis involves the work of a veterinarian. This is a very serious situation, so send for your vet right away. This is not something to try and eal with alone. While waiting for your vet to come, bring your horse into a warm stall and blanket him. Most likely, your vet will prescribe antispasmodics, sedatives, and perhaps antiobiotics.
