| Bell- An altar tool, symbol of the goddess and rung during ritual to invoke Her. Also rung to ward off negative or evil, and to envoke good energies. To signal the beginning and/or end of a spell. Can symbolized the motion of elements and its swinging to & fro, represents the extremes of good and evil; positive and negative. Biddy- A "doll", made from the last sheaf from the last harvest. About 4 inches. Bind- To cast a spell upon, to stop an evil person from doing harm. Blessed Be- A traditional greeting among Witches. Pronounced in 3 syllables. Boggart- Another brownie type, quite similar to a polergeist. Bolline- A white handled knife, single edged knife to reflect its working nature, and is used in ritual purposesof cutting herbs, or engraving candles, etc. Book of Shadows- (BOS). A witches handwritten book of spells, rituals, and magical information. Book, Mirror- a dairy record of personal magickal events. Brownie- The most famous of the house spirites. A brownie will stick around and finish extra cleaning as long as he gets food for his labor. The food must never be directly offered the Brownie and one should never try to see him. Breaking any of those taboos will cause the brownie to become angry and leave. A well treated brownie can be incredibly helpful and faithful to no end. He will often punish the servants, call for a midwife, or doctor when one is needed, and some have loved their loved their human companion so much that they are said to have immigrated to america to america with them. The best place to leave food for a brownie is on a warm hearth. The Burning Times- The historical period in europe when christians persecuted and tortured witches and alleged witches. Thousands were put to death, usually by hanging or burning at the stake. Catharize- Means to clean and purify, then Catharsis- also means to purify, but usually thought of as emotional rather than physical, like claming music or a pretty picture; it clears the mind, soothing the emotions, etc. Cauldron- An iron, fire proof pot or kettle. Usually having 3 claw feet and a handle. It's used for cooking and brewing. It symolizes the goddess, the elements of Water, and reincarnation, immortality, and inspiration. Centering- The Act of feeling solid, balanced and focused emotionally. Chalice- A cup with similar meaning to the cauldron. Represents the Element Water. Marriage, abundance, and inexhaustable sustinence. Charge/Charging- To infuse an object with your personal power. Circle- A group, less formal than a coven, of Witches who practice, worship, celebrate or study together. Circle Dance- A ceremonial or recreational dance where in the members of a grove or coven link hands and move deosil within the ceremonial area. Coming out of the Broom Closet- Living openly as a Witch. Consecration- A ceremony that dedicates a thing or place for sacres use. Coven- An organized group of Witches who practice, worship and/or celebrate together. Covens traditionally consist of no more than 13 members, are lead by a High Priestess with High Priest. Covenstead- A place where a coven of witches usually meets, often the home of the High Priest/ess. The Craft- Witchcraft. Dedicant- A new witch in the period of study and apprenticeship before initiation. The traditional period for this is a year and a day. Deosil- Clockwise. Forward. Following the Sun and Moon's motion in the sky. Divination- Any practice that reveals the future or unknown things. Tarot Cards, Runes and Crystal Balls are all means of divination. Elder- A witch who as attained a position of respect in the Craft. A coven member who has attained and advanced degree of initiation. Esbat- Coven meetings held at the full moon. A Lesser Sabbat, celebrating Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox or Winter Solstice. |
