Behold Sailor Saturn, the sweet child with the power to destroy worlds, the Senshi of Death and Rebirth! She was reborn on Earth as Tomoe Hotaru. In English they used the same name, but changed it to Hotaru Tomoe. In Japan the family name comes before the personal name. For instance in Japan Jane Smith would be Smith Jane. (I don't know what that really has to do with Sailor Saturn, but it sure helps understand name translations.) Hotaru's mother died when she was very young, so she grew up living with her father. When she was little (maybe around four) she was in her father's laboratory. Suddenly there was an explosion, and she was knocked out. Her father, Professor Tomoe grabbed his daughter, and looked around frantically for an exit, but flames were blocking everything. Suddenly a daimon appeared and offered to help him. Professor Tomoe said he didn't care about himself, he just wanted to save his daughter. So the daimon took over Professor Tomoe's body, and the spirit of Mistress Nine was planted in Hotaru. These were the perfect hosts, because Professor Tomoe was a genius, and Hotaru's body was already the reincarnation of Saturn, so she would be powerful.
Hotaru grew up, never knowing about the spirits inside her. She was thin and sickly. She had fits during which she hurt people, but didn't remember what happened. Then when she was twelve she met Chibi-usa/Rini. They became good friends. Hotaru as worried that she might have a fit, and hurt Chibi-usa, but Chibi-usa refused to let anything, including Hotaru's fears stand in the way of their friendship. Sailor Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto sensed strange energy from Hotaru, and guessed that she might be Saturn. They were worried about Chibi-usa, because they knew of Saturn's destructive power Still, Chibi-usa refused to let anything get in the way of their friendship. When she became powerful enough Mistress Nine tried to completely take over Hotaru's body, and kill Hotaru. But she kept having lapses where Hotaru's spirit tried to gain control. Then Mistress Nine got the purity Chalice, and she began to powerthe machine to destroy the world. Then Hotaru realized it was now or never. She thought of the people she love; her father, and Chibi-usa. She finally erdicated Mistress Nine, but instead of becoming Hotaru again she became Sailor Saturn. She went to destroy the destruction machine, and doing so involved using so much energy that she would have died if Super Sailor Moon hadn't helped her. As it was she was reborn as a tiny baby (Senshi of Death and Rebirth, get it?) All this happens in S Series.
Reborn, she grew up with no memory of either her past life. Then the spirit of Sailor Saturn came to her when she was around ten, and gave her her memories. Then she became Super Sailor Saturn.
