Messages in the Moonlight - Scrying

Scrying

There are several forms of scrying. Three of the most popular are:

Water Gazing
Water gazing often uses a black bowl filled with water or a silver bowl with water dyed dark blue or black. An alternative would be a glass bowl filled with water held against a black cloth.

Fire Gazing
Fire Gazing often uses a roaring fire (small bonfire, fireplace, wood stove, et cetera) or a candle flame. Do not stare directly into the flame (it will damage your eyes). Try looking below the flame (I've heard looking above or off to a side works too).

Mirror Scrying
Mirror scrying uses a black mirror (these can be made a number of ways).

To scry, gaze into (not at) the object. Blink when you need to (you don't want to strain the eyes). The object may cloud, and symbols will eventually appear. When you get to a point that you begin to see symbols, continue gazing until the images stop.
This technique will take time to master. When you first start, don't spend more than 5-10 minutes gazing (it will put strain on the eyes otherwise). It may take several practice sessions before you begin to see anything.
