Merkur Scorpio Article
New York Times, October 1988
(part of a new car review from New York Times)
The most underrated car in the $20,000 to $30,000 luxury sedan market comes from Ford of Europe, and is sold in this country as the Merkur Scorpio.  The Scorpio competes with the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz 300-Series in Germany, but it costs only $24,000 in the states.  The Scorpio is a wonderful driver's car, with fabulous handling and ride from an all-independent suspension.  The four-wheel disc brakes have ABS, standard. There isn't a better handling, better steering, better stopping sedan on the American road.
The Scorpio is a five-door hatchback, with an immense interior.  The four individually adjustable bucket seats are ergonomically supurb, and there is more rear seat room than in most limousines.  Under the hood is the same 2.9-liter V-6 that has been proven "truck tough" in Ford's Ranger pickup.  From the outside, the Scorpio shares Ford Motor Company's Aero Look styling, which makes this one of the most modern and best looking cars around.  There is just nothing wrong with the Scorpio, except that American buyers don't seem sophisticated enough to appreciate this fully excellent luxury car.  Smart consumers can pick up a real bargain at over-stocked Lincoln/Mercury-Merkur dealers.  A word to the wise.
