In Mizoram, the "local" is mainly obtained from fremented rice. This is fast becoming a popular drink as Mizoram is a total prohibitory state and hence getting booze into the state is bloody tough. Actually, if you're checked at the airport and they find a bottle, the cops usually let you go if you say "personal consumption". But if they find 3 to 4 bottles, you're screwed! So, when you're carrying back a huge load, make sure you're not standing out from the crowd. A guy travelling alone or with other guys, wearing provocative Tee shirts and face studded with earings, is surely bound to have his lugguage thoroughly scrutinised. Travelling with a senior citizen would help. If alone, try to blend in. Strike up a conversation with a mother as you approach the gate. Avoid eye contact with the cops. And walk out with her till you're safely away from the eagled-eye cops...

One packet of "local" cost around Rs.40 to 50, and thats roughly 300ml. (Hey come on, don't expect us to standardise the product too!). It is consumed directly without any addition of water, and these "local" always come packed in a small transparent plastic cover, which became something like a symbol of its trademark! :-)

Some of the popular places to get these "local" are Rangvamual, Tanhril, Sairang, Lengpui and Patan. The popular bars are Sertawk bar, Tuitling bar, Red Cross and Saipari bar. I live opposite Sertawk bar. The place used to be a mess during those "alcoholic" days. And then came Total Prohibition, and the place became an even bigger mess due to the daily police raids and gang fights. Now conditions have improved a lot and everything is beautiful. Even though all these places are closed now, the name still remains.

Mizoram Local is one of the safest in the World! There is no history of it causing deaths (like the Hooch Tragedy in Cal and Kerela). Infact, scientists say it boost up your hormone secretion hence increasing your stamina production. A regular local drinker usually have long hair, an old pair of denims, a baseball cap, and usually don't have money!

One of the most lively places to have a conversation is in one of those illegal bars. My God, the kinda conversation and jokes ppl say is totally amazing. Its not like the bars you see here. Instead of private cubicles or tables, every one sit in a circle kinda formation, and everyone talk to each other, and whether you know the person or not does not matter. You want a basic training in Public Socialising, this is it! The person who doesn't talk much and only listens is excused if he's new to the particular bar, but once he's a regular and he's still not doing much of a talking, he gets kinda alienated. Sometimes he's prompted to say something too.

These bars are usually an all-male hangout. But occassionally we get female visitors too. Thats when the fun begin. Dirty jokes seem to be the topic of the day. And trust me, its your lucky day if the girl/girls aren't attached to any guy around... coz what follows next is what we call "free show"! The girl/girls strip for the small audience gathered around, usually for a free glass of local per audience, or sometimes no charge at all. Ofcourse no such thing as gang-banging takes place, the furthest you may come to is if they let you feel them up! And later, we all go to our respective destinations, parting as new friends, nothing else.
