Basketball has been my life, my inspiration and reason to live.
And always will be.....
I started playing BB at the age of 10, and improved mainly due to dedication.
I was taught all the basics in my old school, St.Thomas, Calcutta, itself,
and hence, when i moved to Montfort, i was quite a good listener, ready to
accept mistakes, open to corrections pointed out by my Seniors etc.
From 7th to 12th std. onwards, i never failed to be in the team. When i was in
10th, i was selected as the Senior school BB team Captain. It was during that
year that i learnt the most important lesson in BB: That overconfidence is
the harbinger of defeat.
During 11th std, I spent the major part of my Acedemic Year touring Tamilnadu
in order to participate in Various BB tourneys. Went all over TN ~ Madurai, Chennai,
Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Theni, Kodaikanal, Ooty, Neyveli, Salem, Polachi,
Chengelpet, and it was quite a successful campaign. But, disastrously,
my studies went down. I am an ardent fan of the NBA, never failing to miss any
game under favourable circumstances. Their motto is "Stay in School". I realised that
playing isn't everything. Look at all those basketball Supermen in the NBA. Each
and every single player got a degree in something at least. No school drop-outs
in the NBA League. It was then that i gotta decide: it was either 100% play
and improve a lot, or 50% play 50% studies and not improve at all. I chose the latter,
and Thank God, it is because of that wise decision, that i'm in College today !
But a plague struck once more when i came to 12th Std. I was appointed the
School Basketball Captain. And, since we won so many tournaments the previous
year, it was our duty to defend our various titles. And with our Public Exams fast
approaching, it was indeed a heavy burden. As the School BB captain, i couldn't
shy away my responsibilities. At the same time, the forth-coming Exams were equally
important. ( I was also a House Captain !!). But, haleluia, things worked out
quite well through-out. Patrick House, of which i was the captain, was looked after
by my assistants Vinay Somaiah and Antony Paul, to both which i am eternally
grateful. And our BB coach and School Sports Secretary, including the Pricipal,
were quite understanding: i was excused from all morning practices, which indeed
took off quite a load from my back. In the end, we retained most of our titles and won a few
new ones (win some, lose some). And in all my six Years in Montfort, the BB team
has never entered 'State Championship'. I can now proudly claim that achievement,
and makes me more proud to say that it was during my Captaincy !!!
The Gods smiled on me too. On the Felicitation function, I was awarded the Prestigious
School Best Basketball Player Award !!
Played a few tournaments in Mizoram too. Hoped from team to team. I was first
in "Vipers", then "Vikings", played for a short time in "Montfort Mizo Team",
and then "J.L.Vision". Entered tournaments in all teams, but only the last
proved fruitful.....we won the Mizoram State Tournament ! It was my most memorable
day. I was the top-scorer, and adjudged the Best-player of the Tournament!!!
But, later, differences split up the team again, and right now i am in ABC.
(it stands for 'Andrew Basketball Club'. Andrew was my former "Vikings" team-mate,
who passed away ).
The team is managed by his father who is the honourable Director of Sports and Games in Mizoram.
My team-mates are mainly renegade ex-J.L.Visioners and ex-Montfortians.
I haven't played any tournament ever-since i settled in "ABC", as the tournament time
and my Vacation time did not coincide. Really looking forward to the day i'll be able to
play in a basketball tourney along with my ABC team-mates.
College life has really affected my game. Playing every evening with our African
players, is making me improve my game like hell. I made it to the College team
on my first year itself, and it is indeed a wonderful experience playing with
the team. Plus, i really enjoy playing with those IMS guys, who come frequently
to our college ground.
