Projects MAJOR PROJECT: Aug 2002-June 2003 TITLE : Prediction of Transcription Terminators for Bacillus subtilis GUIDES : Prof. K.V. Venkatesh, Chemical Engineering Department and Prof. K.K. Rao, Biotechnology Centre SYNOPSIS : The project includes study of the mechanism of transcription termination and characterization of transcription terminators of Bacillus subtilis finally leading to the development of a software package to predict terminators of B. subtilis. In this project, I have done extensive data analysis and the result was the discovery of new characteristics, which are shared by all the terminators of Bacillus subtilis. I am also modifying two commercial softwares, GeSTer and TransTerm, for predicting terminator sequences. MINOR PROJECT: July 2001 - November 2001 TITLE : Metabolic Flux Analysis and Genomics/Proteomics GUIDE : Prof. G.K. Sureshkumar, Chemical Engineering Department. SYNOPSIS : We have a large amount of information on genome sequences and protein structures/functions from relevant databases. However, assigning function to potential proteins (gene products) is still a big challenge. This project aimed to evaluate metabolic flux analysis principles as a technique for the above. SUMMER INTERNSHIP May 2001-June 2001 INDUSTRY : Dr. Reddys Laboratory Limited, Hyderabad. PROJECT 1 : Ammonia Recovery in Ibuprofen Process SYNOPSIS : Ammonia is a by-product in the Ibuprofen process and cannot be disposed off to atmosphere directly as per government specifications. However, 15% Ammonia solution can be sold. The earlier absorption column was producing only 6% concentrated ammonia solution. Methods to overcome this problem were suggested. PROJECT 2 : Methanol Recovery in Ibuprofen process SYNOPSIS : Methanol is used as a solvent in the Ibuprofen process. A distillation column was designed for 99.9% recovery of Methanol. TECHNICAL PROJECTS Did a project on Mathematical Modeling for Blood Circulation in the human body, under Prof. K.V. Venkatesh, in the Transport Phenomena course. I visited Skol Breweries Ltd. (a branch of Shaw Wallace), Uran, Mumbai to study the brewing process. Suggested a method to find out the viscosity of a Newtonian liquid without using viscometer. Did a project on Fuel Cell under Dr. S. Roychoudhary, DRDO, Ambernath, Mumbai. COMPUTATIONAL PROJECTS Developed a code at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, under Prof. P.R. Nott, to find velocity profile of granular particles passing through two vertical parallel plates. I also designed the experimental set up for the same. Developed code for finding thermodynamic properties of chemicals at different pressures and temperatures. Developed code for the determination of thermodynamic properties like the dew point, the bubble point and the flash point using the UNIFAC model. OTHER PROJECTS Did term projects on Child Labour in India and Positive and Negative Aspects of Privatization of Education. Computational Skills PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES : C++, Visual Basic, FORTRAN 90 OPERATING SYSTEMS : Windows NT/98, Unix, Linux SOFTWARE PACKAGES : GeSTer, EMBOSS, BLAST, MATLAB, Pro-Engineer Extra-Curricular Activities INTERESTS: Reading spiritual books, Meditation Meditation techniques have enabled me to lead a balanced life. It also helps me to keep myself even-minded and to realize my responsibility towards society. Social service 1.
