I'm gonna tell ya a story
about a dog named Red-
He was the meanest of thangs
I once heard it said.

I came home one Saturday
and saw him there
He was messy and dirty,
many mats in his hair.

I tried to pet him
he put up a fuss
Growlin' and snarlin',
he was an angry ol' cuss!

So I left him alone
just let him be-
He was angry at life
and in no mood for me.

The next mornin' when I awoke
he was still there-
Seems he took a fancy
To my girl dog named Cher.

It was time to feed,
I started on my rounds,
one at a time-
I poured out the mounds.

I filled an old pan
and started over to Red-
He didn't want me near,
not even to be fed!

So I took a long stick
and pushed the bowl to him-
He bit at the stick
His mood was quite grim.

He gobbled up that food
like he never before ate-
It made me quite sad,
he was in an awful state.

My friends and family asked me
"Have you lost your mind?"
"That dog is a menace
not the keepin' kind!"

Well as mean as he was,
I saw something in him-
Couldn't tell ya what
but it made me grin.

So I decided to let
ol' Red hang around awhile-
And he decided to stay,
as if I were on trial.

As the days passed
he still remained tough-
Wouldn't let me touch him,
feedin' him was enough.

One day I went out
to start my rounds-
my hands were full
couldn't see the ground.

Ol'Red's hair stood up
straight down his back-
he meant business
and that was a fact!

He growled and he snarled
showed his teeth to me-
I dropped the feed and
backed up under a tree.

My neighbor heard the ruckus
and came outside to find-
me up against that tree
'n Ol' Red done lost his mind!

He brought with him a gun
I felt my hands begin to shake-
just the very thought of it
I thought my heart would break.

Then before I even knew it
I heard a loud shot ring out
I closed my eyes, not knowin'
should I cry or give out a shout.

And then I looked down
with tears on my face
Red gave a small whine
my heart started to race.

You see Ol'Red didn't want
to charge and bring harm to me-
He saw something that
I did not see.

There on the ground was
a rattle snake in my path
and had Red not stopped me
I'da felt its wrath

I dropped to my knees
and I hugged Ol' Red
"Thank You my friend"
I laughed and said.

From that day on
he was a great friend
for many years to come
'Til Ol'Red did meet his end.

The moral of my story?
it's simple you see-
look what could have
happened with Red and me!!

That old sayin
is very true-
It's why im sharin'
my story with you...

You shouldn't judge a book
by its cover-
If I would have done it
I'da been that snake's supper! ;)
