This is a story
about a squirrel named Nan-
Around my backyard
she played and she ran.

At first she would hide out
in my old oak tree-
She'd run up those branches,
when she saw me.

I'd watch every mornin'
she'd scramble and play-
She was the greatest start
to my oncoming day.

After awhile I brought a
pail of peanuts with me-
And scattered 'em around
under that old oak tree.

I'd sit and I'd wait
'til she came out-
Around 8 o'clock
she'd frolic about.

She'd never come near
until I went inside-
Then she collected
her peanuts with pride.

'Til one special day
I didnt expect it-
She came to my foot,
pushed a peanut up at it!

I wasn't sure
what I should do-
I spoke real softly
"Hi Nan.. how are you?"

She sniffed at me
and wiggled her tail-
She stood on her back feet,
and peeked in my pail.

You could tell by the look
on her tiny little face-
She had hit the jackpot
this was the peanut place!

After that day she
would come up to me-
I'd stretch out my leg
she'd climb it like a tree.

I'd talk to that squirrel
like she understood-
We became friends
like only we could.

Then one day I heard
a very small pop-
It was the boy next door
my poor squirrel he shot.

He saw my reaction
he dropped his gun-
And out of my yard
that boy did run.

I ran over to Nan
she did not move-
I petted her gently
her coat was so smooth.

I scooped her up
and went inside-
And slowly rocked her
as i cried.

I didnt understand
this couldnt be the end-
Nan was so sweet,
she was a very good friend.

I sat there and cried
I was so puzzled-
How could this be?? and then,
I felt a small nuzzle.

As I looked down
with tears on my face-
I saw Nan's eyes open
my heart began to race.

You see, the BB had missed her,
just scared her, she fell,
The drop was so long-
like she fell in a well.

Now Nan is just fine,
she is still my friend.
I guess it is time
for my story to end.

The moral of my story
is simple you see-
It's a tale about heartbreak
from one tiny BB.
