I had first written "Souls of Gray" to go alone, but I found the vision seemed half complete,
like Gabrielle's story of mankind's soul. So I wrote "Souls Apart" which is posted on this site also.
If you read "Souls of Gray" I highly recommend you read "Souls Apart" also.

Picture Gabrielle on the deck leaning against a railing, wrapped up in a thick cloak against the cold. Her eyes stare into the darkness of a moonless night. Unseen, Xena stands deep in the shadows, her eyes seeing only Gabrielle.

always before I had listened to your voice
I heard your words and felt your emotions
those dark days that you suppress
I urged you to share against your will

always wanting to understand inside
the darkness that lurks beneath that heart of light
I thought I knew your pain and woe
but I never understood, did I

the thrill of death at those lean strong hands
I could never completely comprehend
none of your words ever taught me
the final lesson I needed to learn

the knife in my hand thrusting deeply
my only intent to destroy a life eternally
I hear words that are not yours come from my lips
the emotions I feel can be only mine

my eyes see that darkness more clearly now
but it is not yours I see across my soul
inwardly I look and see in my guilt
a shadow where I had only wished the shine of hope

now I understand your words more truly
your emotions I have come closer too
your shades of the past
I see as a possibility of my own

truly I have learned a harsh lesson
never again will I see life as black and white
instead through your eyes I behold
closer to the truth you and me
