Picture Gabrielle on the deck leaning against a railing, wrapped up in a thick cloak against the cold.
Her eyes stare into the darkness of a moonless night. Unseen, Xena stands deep in the shadow, her eyes seeing only Gabrielle.
Souls Apart

you stand alone by the sea silent
a bard's mind a puzzle I cannot read
what do those eyes see in this darkness
could it be the disappoint of a warrior's soul
anger, fury, rage, hate, insanity
all from a past of deepest shadow
so close to the surface it had come
costing you what you held most dear
a deed of blood and loss of self
done with harsh true force and purpose
your hand the weapon destructive
you heart and soul the terrible cost
your hope you say now has returned
but how can I believe when I see clearly
the absence of faith in green eyes
crying out in anquish bleeding
my soul my darkness my inhumanity
the cause of spreading shadows
your soul so light it burns my soul
now edged now beseiged by my curse
how can you stay so near to me
your breath and mine sharing the wind
when I've cost you once again
a treasure you held in love eternal
my steel is no weapon here
this battlefield I am the vanquished
flesh, bone, and strength of my arm
cannot protect you from your dark dreams
how I want you to be free again
once more to be without fear and woe
but am I selfish to want to see
your soul never apart from me
