Antheraea polyphemus Cramer

Larva. Third and fourth instar.

Cocoon on evergreen oak.

  • Distribution. North America.
  • Ovum. Large, with two brown stripe round the perimeter.
  • Foodplants. This species is polyphagous. Larva feed on more than 50 species of trees (Ferguson 1972) including oak, maples, plum, apple. For a complete list look at Bill Oelkhe page. Personally I use Fagus sylvatica in summer and Quercus ilex in winter.
  • Larva. The fifth instar larva average 8 cm. They are easy to rear and grow very fast, expecially in summer.
  • Cocoon. Small and very hard in touch. Covered with a white powder.
  • Adults. Male 10-11 cm. female 11-12 cm.
  • Books. For more informations see  Ferguson (1972), Tuskes (1996), Opler (1995), Gardiner (1982), Baxter (1992).
