Antheraea pernyi Guérin-Ménéville

Antherea pernyi larva. First and last instar.


  • Distribution. From Amurland to China.
  • Ovum. Large round and brown.
  • Foodplants. Larva feed on Quercus, Fagus, Castanea sativa and Prunus. Anyway the best food plant is Quercus.
  • Larva. The fifth instar larva average 8 cm. Caterpillars are very easy to rear. Ideal species for the novice.  Baxter (1992).
  • Cocoon. Large (60 mm), spun up amongst the leaves. The silk of this species is esported from china as Tussore Silk Gardiner (1982).
  • Adults. Male and female 10-11 cm.
