Larva. First, second and fourth instar



  • Distribution. North America, from Canada to Mexico.
  • Ovum. Medium size. Mottled dark brown and grey.
  • Foodplants. Polyphagous in USA,  but regional race have their prefered foodplants. Larva do best when reared on Juglans regia and persimmon (Diospyros kaky). The moths are very large when larva are feed on persimmon (Baxter 1992). For a complete list of foodplants look at Bill Oelkhe home page.
  • Larva. The fifth instar larva average 8 cm. Larva are easy to rear and grow very fast but require cool airy conditions Baxter (1992). Two brood.
  • Cocoon. Small and soften, spun up amongst the foodplant.
  • Adults. Male and female 10-11 cm.
