Larva, final instar



  • Distribution. Widely distributed throught Asia. Northern India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Taiwan, Java, New Guinea, Sumatra. See Peigler (1989).
  • Ovum. Large, 3 mm pink in color.
  • Foodplants. Polyphagous (Peigler 1989). The best food are Ligustrum sp. and Ailanthus altissima but Syringa vulgaris and Salix are accepted too.
  • Larva. The last instar larva grow to an immense size (10 cm). In captivity they require hot and humid conditions (Baxter 1992).
  • Cocoon. Brown, compact, suspended by a short peduncle to the foodplant
  • Adults. The larger Lepidoptera of the world. The wingspan reach 250 mm.
