This was a very good book! A quick read and a page turner! The words used by the author really made you see exactly what she is trying to say. I didn't have a favorite character because they all made the story. I will continue to read books by Bernice McFadden. I am looking forward to reading This Bitter Earth. Loved this book! DeeDee
I would recommend this book to others. My favorite character was Pearl because she inspired Sugar to be more than a whore. She expressed that everyone has a dark side and that people can change. I liked how the story ended, leaving you wanting to know what will happen when Pearl finds out that Sugar is her step daughter. Iesha
I laughed, I cried, and I cursed! This book was excellent the imagery made me feel as if I was in Bigelow sitting on the porch sipping on some Pike Lemonade! I enjoyed getting to know the characters and can't wait to read This Bitter Earth to see some people get brought back to reality (Shirley). I found myself reading this book in the shower, I did not want to put it down. I loved this book and I would definetly recommend this book-- it is a must read. Roz
This was a very interesting book. It kept you wanting to read more and not put it down. There is really nothing I would change in this book except the way the town women treated Sugar. I feel Pearl was my favorite character, due to the way she went to Sugar and made herself available. Kelly
I couldn't get into the book because I couldn't relate. But I did finish it. I felt sorry for Jude and think that it is really a small world because of what happened to Jude and Sugar. I will read This Bitter Earth and hope since it speaks more of the characters I will be able to get into it. Georgie Poorgie
