A Cold and Windy Evening
by Josephine Silva
It was a cold and windy evening in the Cutten area of Eureka.
The wind
howled through the giant redwood trees. A light shined brightly from the
Silva's house, a quiet wood framed home nestled among the towering majestic
redwood trees. A flickering of light emulating from the fireplace... could
be detected from the outside. Suddenly a whaling siren cut through the
air...a fire engine and ambulance halted at the curb of the Silva house. A
fireman raced to the front door, pounding and calling out names...there was
no response... the sound of a window breaking could be heard ...a fireman
leaped through the broken bedroom window. He loped down the hallway and into
the kitchen where three seemingly lifeless bodies lay on the floor. He
reached for the door handle, to let the others in, when he heard a moaning
coming from the stirring bodies...the others raced through the
door...one...two...three steps across the room...crunch, crunch, crunch came
a sound from under their feet...crab shells were scattered, two inches deep,
all over the kitchen floor...there lie three people...each held a nut
cracker in one hand and a crab leg in the other hand... a murmuring
could be heard almost a haunting, chanting refrain...
I CAN'T BELIEVE I ATE THE WHOLE THING!!!
