Portuguese Sweet Bread


7 cups flour

2 tablespoon melted butter

1 cup warm milk

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon salt

2 packages dry yeast (quick active)

4 eggs


Disolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm milk. Mix sugar, salt in large bowl. Add melted butter,beated eggs, yeast. Start adding flour a cup at a time. Add remaining warm milk alternating with flour. Mix with wooden spoon until stiff and continue to mix by hand. Knead for about 5 minutes. Place dough in large greased bowl. Cover with cloth and put in warm place to rise until double in size. Punch dough to remove air bubbles. Shape dough in round loaves and place in greased round cake pans. Brush top with beaten egg whites. Cover with cloth and let rise 1 hour. Bake in preheated 300 degree oven. Bake 30 minutes or until done. Remove from pans immediately and cool on rack. Makes 2 loaves.
