VACATION IN HAWAII

Living in Humboldt County we are accustomed to the rain. It started to rain on New Years Day, this year, and rained and rained, and rained non-stop. One morning I woke up, it was still raining...I decided I had enough of the rain...I told John "let's go to Hawaii...I need the sun...I've had it with the rain". He laughed and I said,"I'm serious. Let's go to Hawaii." I called the travel agency and told the agent I wanted to book a trip to Hawaii. She asked when we wanted to leave. I said...this afternoon. There was a long pause... she said she couldn't get us out that quick. HA! Guess no one ever said that to her before. She did get us out in 10 days.

So, away we went. The limo service picked us up at home and drove us to the airport, we took a plane to San Francisco, then hopped on a plane to Hawaii. When we got off the plane in Hawaii the temperature was 81 degrees and clear skies. Just what I needed.Click Blue skies were smiling at me. I feel so much better when the sky is blue.

We stayed in a hotel at Wakikii. The room was a suite...it had a living room, dinette and kitchenette combination and a bedroom. Very nice place. Continentel breakfast was included.

We went shopping for Hawaiian shirts and a mu-mu. Can't find Hawaiian shirts here in Eureka in the middle of the winter. The shirts in Hawaii are all made in Hawaii. The colors and patterns are beautiful. We ended up buying seven shirts.

Our first adventure was a luau in Paradise Cove. ClickIt was fantastic. So much entertainment in four hours. The meal was traditional luau food...roasted pig, and fruits to name a few. There were hula dancers and music and I learned how to make a lei.

The next night we went on a windjammer sunset dinner cruise. ClickIt was terrific. The windjammer used it's motor to bring us out onto the ocean and we stayed watching the beautiful sunset. The sky was so clear and the sun really put on a color bright show for us. The entertainment on the cruise was great and we got a chance to dance.

We went on the yellow submarineClick down 117 feet below the surface of the ocean and saw bright colored fish and even a shark swimming around.Click I decided that shark was looking for me. HA! Each passenger had a port hole to look out and the water was clear and a gorgeous shade of blue.Click

On saturday we had made arrangements to meet two friends we had met on Lusaweb, a Portuguese web site. We had never met in person...only communicating on the computer. It was an exciting experience meeting them for the first time.

We met at the Portuguese Genelogy Society of Hawaii, where Sandy and MaxineClick are volunteers. When we arrived they met us with a lei greeting and with open arms and a big hug. We were instant friends for life. It's strange even though we had never met face to face before...I felt we were long time friends. I guess being Portuguese has that affect on people.

We went to the Arizona Memorial together.Click What an awesome experience visiting the wreckage of the Arizona. A movie of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the events leading up to the attack were shown before we were motorboated to the wreck. The names of all who died that fateful day, December 7, 1941, are engraved in marbleClickSailors and Marines who "went down with their ship".

We left the Arizona Memorial and went to Maxine's home for lunch and an afternoon of visiting and laughing and laughing and laughing and laughingClick Maxine's hubby, Chuck, met us with Valentine Heart Balloons. Maxine has avocados growing in her yard. They look like huge green pears hanging from the trees.Click We spent a delightful afternoon sharing our experiences growing up and being PortugueseClick...and suprisingly enough they were simular experiences... tho we grew up thousands of miles apart.

We hated to leave Sandy and Maxine and Chuck...but we have three terrific friends in Hawaii that we intend on seeing often.

We went on another sunset dinner cruise...Clickwhich was terrific. Each sunset dinner cruise was special and unique in it's own way. The awesome sunsets were more than I could of ever hoped for. The clear skies alive and singing with color. A sight to remember on these gray overcast days here in Eureka.

We visited the aquariumClick and the Dole Pineapple PlantationClick swam in the hotel pool, and feasted on fish and pu-pu. Visited the Elks LodgeClick To say we had a great time would be an under-statement. We had the best time of our lives. We have decided to make a Hawaiian Vacation a yearly event. When the gray skies and rain start to get me down...we are heading for Hawaii and enjoy the warmth of the people and good weather.Click
