Ballroom Dancing
Just like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly, John and I "gotta dance, gotta dance".
We met at a dance 46 years ago. I met another boy the same night. I danced with John and the other boy all night. I really liked John the best, but he never asked me for a date. I figured he didn't like me as much as I liked him. A few months later I was at another dance and John walked in. My heart jumped into my throat. I glanced back at the door again and he wasn't there. I guessed he wasn't interested in me. Suddenly he was standing in front of me and asked, "Why aren't you dancing?" I answered, "Cause nobody asked me." He said, "Bet I can tell you what they are going to play next." I said, "What?" "A rhumba," he answered. And the band started to play,"Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White." I didn't know it, but when he disappeared he was asking the band to play it.
Sounds kinda corny doesn't it? A 19 year old boy and a 16 year old girl, meeting and 3 years later marrying and dancing through life together. The meeting was that simple, but the rest wasn't quite so simple. No need to tell the complicated details of our life together. I guess all I really want to say is that no matter how tough things have gotten or how wonderful things have become...we still love to dance together. Oh yes, incidently...he told me, after 30 years of marriage, why he didn't ask me out the first time we met ...The answer is he didn't have a car and didn't think I would go out with a boy without a car.
We dance 2 or 3 times a week. We exercise 3 times a week so we can stay in shape to dance. We also take dance lessons...we figure no matter how much we know, there is always more to learn. Of course, "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" is our all time favorite song. But some of our other favorites are, "Unforgetable," "In the Mood," and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B."
We "gotta dance, gotta dance, gotta dance."
John and I dancing at a Christmas in July Party...the theme was The Black and White ball. I wore a white satin brocade top and black slacks (I made my outfit) and John wore his white dinner jacket and black slacks and black bow tie.
