Los Angeles

back

LA, the most fantastic place in the world, to dance salsa! I travelled here to learn how to dance the LA-style and stayed from August 26th 06 - February 2nd 07. It was my dream coming true, an absoulte amazing experience!

On the right hand side you will find links to my favorite salsaclubs, listed by day. And below you will find a description of each club.

The first link is to Albert Torres site. Here you can find information about salsaclubs in LA that he promotes. For some clubs he has a list and if you sign on to it you get a discount when entering the club.

MONDAY
The Mor Bar:
This little bar in Santa Monica is truly a hidden jewel. Cristian Oviedo teaches here and clases are 8-9pm for beginners and 9-10 pm for intermediate. Cristian has an energy and dance style that is just amazing! You can't help yourself being totally entertained and inspired by this man.
After the classes the DJ is spinning great salsa and some of the best salsadancers in Los Angeles, and world known names, regularly visits this bar.
Minus: It has cement floor
This bar is a must!

Alex da Silvas club - Palm Terrace:
Class from 8.30 - 9.30, sosial dancing afterwards. Alex and his amazing partner Alien Ramirez are showing off their skills at the dancefloor.
A nice atmosphere with intermediate dancers. Good dancefloor and not too crowded.
Closes a little early, 12.30-01.00.

El Floridita:
Located in the heart of Hollywood. This club draws a nice and relaxed crowd. Its a small little place and gets packed. Jhonny Polanco y su Amistad plays every Monday. Rogelio Moreno is too be seen almost every Monday as well. People goes here to enjoy good cuban food and to relax and have fun dancing. No show off skills is necessary. You will find people dancing all styles and being at diffrent levels but still having tons of fun together. Recommended.

TUESDAY
Stevens Steak House:
I can't recommend this place enough!!! Its absolutly amazing! It spins salsa every day! Monday-Sunday all year long! Anyhow I've chosen to describe the two best days, after my opinion, Tuesdays and Sundays. (see under Sunday) On Tuesdays the crowed is smaller then on Sundays, but you have all the professionals dancing their ass off. Inventing and trying out new moves. This is the place that represent LA's salsascene best, every day you will see something new and fancy. The LA style is constantly being developed and its at this place the new moves are first being tryed out. The atmosphere, the people, the incredible energic and sensual moments. The salsaspirit is just overwhelming, and the place can best be described as heaven. If you don't get a rush from being here, you will probably never get it. Dancing or watching, its fantastic!

Mama Juanas:
If you live in the area of North Hollywood this will be a safe bet. You will find all kinds of people and a pretty good level. A learning level so to speak. Not a very big dancefloor, but nice people and a good atmosphere. They also offer classes, check out the webpage for more details.

WEDNESDAY
Cohiba:
Located in Long Beach. This club can offer great dancers and a nice dancefloor.

Monsoon Caf:
Located in Santa Monica. Always a band playing, good dancers and a nice dancefloor, but tends to get overcrowded.

THURSDAY
Sevilla:
Located in Long Beach, a nice dance experience, good dancers and dancefloor.

Mama Juanas:
See above description. Thursdays are the best day at this place.

FRIDAY
Sprotmans Lodge:
Located in North Hollywood-Studio City. A overwhelming experience! One of the biggest halls for salsadancing in LA. People driving far for being a part of the Friday night salsa. Alot of great dancers! A Very popular place!! And even though its huge, it gets packed! Thousands of people dancing and sweating! Its a must.

Tatou:
A great place! Not very big, but good dancers and a nice atmosphere. Occasionally you will find dancers doing all kinds of crazy flips here. Recommended.

SATURDAY
Granada:
If your a salsadancer this is one of the places you just HAVE to visit! All the professionals, addicts, intermediates, beginners. Everyone is here. Great dancefloor. Even though its huge, its never big enough, it gets really crowded. But the spirit is so good so it doesn't really matter.

SUNDAY
Stevens Steak House:
Read my description above. Both rooms are open on Sundays and everyone that knows how to walk and dance from all around LA gets together in the biggest and most impressive dancenight of the week. A must for every salsasita and salsasero on this earth.
