MAKONNEN'S TOP 5 - YEAR-END GIFT GUIDE

For those of you who still have late presents to give, or have a present to return and exchange, here are some ideas.

Top of everyone's wish list is PlayStation 2. Want three reasons why the PS2 still rules the roost? How about 'Final Fantasy X', 'Metal Gear Solid 2', and 'Grand Theft Auto 3'!!! True gamers say that for now, Microsoft's X-Box and Nintendo's GameCube have a l-o-n-g way to go to catch up to Sony's fantastic gaming box. It's the sure bet for the console with the longest lastability and greatest variety of use options.

Then, there's 'Metal Gear Solid 2' (PS2). It's the most hyped game of all time, so I'm pretty sure that everyone will want to check it out anyway, simply to see how cool it is. Hideo Kojima's masterpiece does indeed live up to expectations, with some of the most incredible gameplay and visuals ever to be found. Sure the story's a bit whack, but no one should care when they've got a game as cool as this.

My favourite game, 'Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2) -- the ultimate gift for the more mature gamer. Steal cars, take out gang leaders, carouse with a hooker or two - do whatever the heck you want in this ground breaking PS2 title from Rockstar. Remember all those times that you've said to yourself, "I wish I could do this or that" in a game? Well, now you can.

'Halo' (Xbox). Who would have thought? The finest 3D shooter on the market comes out for the Xbox? 'Halo' is reason enough to purchase an X-Box - it combines lightning fast play with some of the coolest weapons and level designs we've ever seen. The editors of Electronic Gaming Monthly almost missed an issue due to their 16-player deathmatch tournaments.

'Final Fantasy X' (PS2). Sure, you may have thought the other Final Fantasy games were pretty cool, but nothing can prepare you for Square's first outing on the PS2. 'Final Fantasy X' is without a doubt the most visually impressive game to date, but everything else - from the storyline, to the music, to the gameplay - is top notch as well. Since Square was able to get 'FFX' out right before the holidays, I couldn't help but have this at the top of my list. It's everything the hype would have had you believe. Trust ME.

You notice I haven't said much abut the 'Dreamcast'. It seems that it took the cancelation of the system to revive its sales, because towards the end of the year the 'Dreamcast' saw some of the greatest popularity it has had since its creation. This was due to great new software titles being introduced by Sega Corporation and its popular third-party game developers.
