Episode Two - Terminus [part one].
I love, adore and worship the beginning of this episode. Actually, I pretty much love the episode. Not because its a fabulous story or anything; simply because I love the way its all put together and that kind of filming and colouring and editing really appeals to me. And it rocks. Really. But enough of my worshipping on with the recap!
Theres a lot in the beginning sequence. Its to the tune of Mad World by Gary Jules. I really hated that song when they re-released it at Christmas and it was number one, or something ridiculous like that. Its not a frickin Christmas song! I mean, sure, it fits wonderfully here, but how is that a Christmas song? Bring back The Darkness and their amusing Christmas song. But I digress. A footballer runs off the pitch, looking upset. There are several shots of the morgue being empty. Leo drives to work. A woman runs. A man waits for the bus. A man in an office is advertising something on the phone. Harry walks down the street, presumably to work (where, precisely, has his car disappeared to in this bit?). A black BMW drives around an estate, with kids cheering. A young guy plays tunes and mixes stuff in his room. Nikki conducts an experiment in front of people. The young guy kisses his mum goodbye and leaves the house. Another woman looks sad. And thats the end of the opening bit. I still love the opening bit every time I see it, its still beautifully put together.
Anyway, the young guy who was mixing records leaves his flat and walks down the road. He stops to admire the black BMW as it cruises by. The sad looking woman walks down the street, still looking sad. Or possibly just worried. Nikki and Harry are in their office; Leo tells him its his turn to go see the body. Its a possible hit and run. Harry seems to think this is not a game of monopoly. Nikki giggles. The sad woman argues with her husband about a holiday. She tells him to bugger off and amuse the two kids for a while. (Obviously Im paraphrasing).
Harry arrives at his crime scene the possible hit and run. Turns out, its the young kid who was mixing records.
The husband of the sad woman meets up with a friend in the park. He rants to her about his wife, Jane. The nice woman offers to buy the kids food and the husband coffee. Shes nice.
Harry examines the body and meets Sergeant Susan. The kid is called Lee Hawthorne and hes sixteen years old. Susan thinks the amount of money the kid is carrying is suspicious. A woman runs up to the tent, asking if theyve got her Lee in there. Apparently, they have got her Lee in there. She goes a bit stir-crazy hardly surprising, given that the poor woman just lost her son.
Leo meanwhile has arrived at a burnt out house. Standing outside are the husband of poor sad Jane and their two kids. Jane Doe (yes, that really is her name) is inside and all sizzled. Leo meets the obnoxious police detective. The obnoxious police detective does obnoxious things; Leo does pathology things; Jane lies on the floor being dead.
Mrs Hawthorne, Lees mother, is in her flat with Susan and Harry. She waffles on about Lees love for football and how he is playing for the youth team. Susan has a cool accent. Harrys tires have been slashed. Shame its a nice car.
The obnoxious police detective says the fire started in the lounge. The dogs picked up a scent of accelerant on the sofa. Apparently, it may be murder. Or arson.
Harry does the autopsy on Lee Hawthorne. I wont bore you with all the medical details (mainly because that would mean listening endlessly to the scene to get all the details and Im really not doing that right now) but they find headlight shards and stuff. Meanwhile, Mrs Hawthorne leaves flowers for her poor baby and looks sad. Even when shes sad, she still has really cool hair. Sometimes, I wish I had hair like that. Unfortunately, my hair is somewhat dull and rather boring. Anyway. Back to the autopsy. Harry decides the cause of death was complete transaction of the thoracic aorta.
Leo and Nikki are giggling in Leos office. Harry walks in and points out that Leo is not being very head of department-y. Leo and Nikki invite Harry out for a nice get-together. How sweet. I love it when they do that loving family in a morgue act.
The next person to appear on screen is a beautiful beautician, who is being chatted up by her fianc. He is marrying her at the weekend.
The money they found on Lee is suspicious, but it isnt fake. Lee has been caught with pot. Turns out none of this is relevant to his death, but never mind.
Leo, meanwhile, is autopsying Jane. The obnoxious detective stands to the side being silently obnoxious. Leo thinks she died of smoke inhalation. She has broken fingernails, which Leo thinks are consistent with her scrabbling to get out. Theres blood on the brain and a fracture of the skull. The obnoxious detective thinks maybe this is a head wound, inflicted by the husband. Leo points out the heat could have caused the fracture.
Susan the sergeant and Harry are back talking to Mrs Hawthorne. They are trying to find out more about Lee. Apparently, they are investigating the possibility that it wasnt an accident. Mrs Hawthorne tells them the money was his wages, he worked at the market. Susan promises to do whatever she can to find out what happened to Lee. Mrs Hawthorne has her doubts about the police priorities.
The children of Jane are playing on their TV. The husband wanders around looking lost, before deciding to call his nice lady friend, Lynne. She sits by the answer phone, not picking up.
Harry and Susan go through the evidence. Theres lots of pretty pictures on the shiny interactive board. Harry thinks the vehicle was braking, which makes it an accident. Susan still thinks its a crime. She has discovered the car is a BMW and that it was black.
The obnoxious detective talks to the husband of Jane. He says he loved Jane, and that they were a normal family.
Harry tells Susan he will get his friend to run a test on the paint. Nikki says some of her enthusiasm must have rubbed off on Harry.
The obnoxious detective tells Leo about the lock on the door. Its very interesting, if youre interested in locks. I am not interested in locks. But anyway, the long and short of it is that she could have locked herself in to burn, or someone else locked her in. Leo says she was alive before the fire started, but cannot say whether she was conscious. There were keys in the living room, but she didnt lock herself out. The obnoxious detective is convinced the husband is sleeping with his best friend and murdered Jane for that reason.
The husband in question is currently on the phone to his best friend (or lover, depending upon your point of view), asking her if they (he and the kids) can stay over. She, presumably, says yes.
The beautiful beautician is at her hen night, wearing a cute outfit and drinking orange juice and smiling a lot. I have a distinct feeling shes going to die soon. Her friend snorts cocaine; she refuses it. The beautician puts on lipstick and takes a pill. She doesnt look very happy, for someone whos about to be married. She is, apparently, dizzy as she falls all over the place. Then she drops dead.
Harry leaves a message for Susan. He has spoken to his friend, and his friend will be able to do the PGC test.
The obnoxious detective is obnoxiously interviewing the husband, Nick. The husband apparently was not having any marital difficulties and did not sleep with Lynne. Personally, I think the detective should stop being obnoxious and just let the husband go. The husband asks for his photos back this is important later on.
Nikki arrives at the club to look at the dead beautician, who is still beautiful but now dead. The woman is Samantha Christian. Nikki finds the pill box in Samanthas bag, and thinks they may be pain killers.
Leo squirts blood into a machine. I have no idea what this machine does, but Im guessing its important. And scientific.
The obnoxious detective talks to Lynne about Nick and Jane. Lynne tells the obnoxious detective that she saw Nick go into the park and followed him in. They then got a burger from the caf in the park, then she had to get back. He rang at work and he told her what happened to Jane. The obnoxious detective is still being obnoxious.
Leo interrupts to tell the obnoxious detective that Jane started the fire. The obnoxious detective thinks Nick is on the insurance scam. Leo thinks he is wrong. I think he is wrong. And obnoxious.
Nikki meets Verity and Heather, who are apparently Samanthas friends from work. She was 29, according to them. And she was really healthy, so Im guessing thats why she refused the cocaine. Verity and Heather admit to there being cocaine around, but are convinced that Sam wouldnt touch it. Samanthas fianc is later found in a shopping trolley. Im assuming this is the result of his stag night, unless he has a regular habit of chaining himself to shopping trolleys and not wearing very much.
The obnoxious detective has found a load of papers about overdrafts and stuff. Apparently, the family was in debt. So perhaps Jane burned down the house for the insurance money. The photos which Nick mentioned are still not there. Leo finds this strange. He thinks Jane removed them because she couldnt bear to destroy them. Leo tells the obnoxious detective what he thinks happened: Jane put the tissue soaked in lighter fluid between the sofa cushions. She lights them and heads for the front door, but the keys arent there. She scrabbles to get out but its too late the fire kills her.
Nikki meets the fianc of Samantha. Hes a nice looking guy, even when hes not handcuffed to a shopping trolley. She stands by whilst the fianc gazes sadly at his beloved.
Harry chats with Mrs Hawthorne about the expenses of Lees funeral. Harry cannot help her, but recommends she get help from the council to pay for it. She wants to give Lee a nice send-off.
The lady detective (whose name I have yet to find out) inquires about the last time the fianc saw Samantha. He saw her at work the day of her hen night. He has no idea what the pills in Samanthas bag were. He says she had an operation to get some moles removed, but that she didnt like taking drugs, so hes not sure why she was on painkillers. He met her in a club, when he was going out with Verity, six months ago.
Cut to the obnoxious detective and Leo talking to Nick once more. Nick tells Leo that Jane kept her keys on a table in the hallway. Leo has no idea what table hes talking about. The obnoxious detective tells Nick that Jane started the fire deliberately so she could claim on the insurance. Nick has no idea that hes 40,000 in debt. Leo says that Jane removed some personal effects before the fire, and this was her fatal mistake: she expected the keys to be on the table in the hallway, but shed already removed the table, and so didnt know where the keys were. Lynne has a confession to make: she has Janes personal effects in her garage. Why it didnt occur to her to tell them earlier, I have no idea. Lyn claims to have no idea what Jane was planning, she just went along with it.
Nikki conducts the autopsy on Samantha Christian. There is a wound on her forehead, consistent with her striking her head on a surface as she fell. There are cuts on the eyelids, implying that shes had quite a bit of surgery. There are also scars suggesting shes had lipo-suction at some point. She has moles on her body, and some recent mole removals. One appears to be infected. Possibly this is why she was on painkillers. The lady detective, meanwhile, is talking to one of Samanthas friends, Heather. She then talks to Verity about pressure at work. Verity says their business is competitive and time runs out for them in that business. Samantha was going to set up her own business when she got married. Verity also says that she and Mike were never serious, that he was never the one for her, and she doesnt mind that Samantha was going to marry him. Nikki is still conducting her autopsy, this time with Harry for company. Harry says shes had a tummy-tuck, and this is where the scar on her bikini line comes from. Nikki agrees and cuts open her heart. Her aortic valve is bicuspid. There are bacteria. The infection from the mole wound must have reached her heart. Nikki notices that her heart is in odd condition for someone so young. She rings the lady detective, and asks her to check how old she is. The lady detective checks and says shes 44 apparently, Sam was lying when she told everyone she was 29.
Harry gets a message from Susan, saying she wants to meet after work to discuss the PGC test. He invites Nikki along, but she declines: she has to talk to Samanthas fianc about Sams death. Nikki explains to Mike about Sams heart condition and her infection. She also, rather tactfully, tells Mike that Samantha was actually 44.
Nick, Janes husband, sits in his room, looking mournful and remembering poor darling Jane. Pretty piano music plays.
Mike, Samanthas fianc, wanders around, looking mournful and remembering poor darling Sam. Pretty piano music plays.
Mrs Hawthorne, Lees mother, stares into space looking mournful and remembering poor darling Lee. Pretty piano music plays.
Leo peels, sniffs and eats an orange. Im not sure what this has to do with anything.
Nikki sits at her desk with her head in her hands, looking rather distant.
The lady detective giggles and drinks wine with her friends.
Mike watches Samanthas friends after the funeral, eventually deciding to sit down with them and drink his beer.
Harry waits for Susan outside the pub. Susan walks on the other side of the road and smiles at him before being dramatically run over by a bus.
And thus ends the first part of Terminus.
Episode Two Terminus [part two].
Harry sits in a pub, drowning his sorrows in a glass of beer. Nikki sits in the lab, reading what could be a very interesting paper. Leo is also reading something in his office. Harry thinks about dead people. We get a nice flashback of Lee being run over, using wonderful colouring. All the flashbacks have this kind of colouring. I love it. We also get to see Susan being run over again. My mum refuses to watch this bit. She says it was bad enough the first time around. But I digress (again).
Nikki is still reading her paper and making notes. Leo comes out and asks her why she wants to go wrestling. Wow. And there was me thinking Nikki looked like such a delicate flower and now we find out shes into wrestling?! She replies, why not?. Harry, apparently, is not very keen. Harry walks in looking mournful and says wrestlings fine. Nikki thinks hes hung-over. She then asks him how he went with Susan. Harry replies, shes dead. This line, for some reason, always makes me laugh. Perhaps its just the tone of Harrys voice when he says itits probably rather messed up that I find this line hilarious. But it is. Harry says he went to meet her and she was knocked over by a bus. I find this hilarious too. Leo appears to be rather puzzled by this. Harry then says he ran over to do what he could, but it was too late: poor Susan was all squished by the bus. Nikki looks concerned. Harry says he tried to call her (how sweet) and then he got pissed in the pub. But it was no ones fault. This line reminds me of what Harry said about his father in Mind and Body, about when his father told him that this was no ones fault. I wonder if this is just coincidence, or if the writers actually want us to make a connection. Perhaps Im just overanalysing again? Thats probably it.
An airplane takes off outside an office window. We see the guy who was on the phone in the beginning of the first episode again. Hes still talking on the phone. I think hes going to die soon. Everything is in slow motion. A woman asks people to read number. Garth, the man who was on the phone, but is now not on the phone, says 421. He wins. Yay, Garth! The woman lectures people about unemployed actors. What, may I ask, is so bad about unemployed actors?! I like unemployed actors! Im sure Emilia Fox was once an unemployed actor, and shes just lovely! But I feel I am digressing. Again. Back to Garth. Garth says theyll all miss Helena. Helena, I presume, is the woman who dislikes unemployed actors. She is, apparently, leaving.
Again, we get to see the footballer from the beginning. He looks depressed. His manager (or coach?) appears to be lecturing him. The footballer sits in the changing rooms and cries.
Garth is talking on the phone again. So is everybody else. I think theyre advertising solar panels. Garth dies. Oh, actually, hes not quite dead but he will be soon.
Mrs Hawthorne takes down her sons poster of the footballer. She sees a news report on the TV about Susan.
Nikki does the autopsy on Garth. To summarise all the medical jargon, he had an anaphylactic reaction. Which basically means he had an allergic reaction. Going into anaphylaxis means your throat closes up and you stop breathing, from what Ive gathered. I only know this because I watch too much House M.D. Its a pretty cool program, and apparently one of the top shows in America. Also, it has Hugh Laurie in it being a snarky doctor and doing an American accent with a cane and a motorbike. Totally cool. And if that doesnt make you want to watch it, it also has Jennifer Morrison looking pretty and wearing nice clothes! Anyway, moving on.
The footballer (whose name I have yet to find out) is standing by a window, drinking and looking depressed. Theres an awful lot of depressed people in this. His girlfriend, Lolly, wanders over to him and tries to get him to talk to a TV guy. The footballer is not enthusiastic. Im still wondering when hes going to die.
The obnoxious detective is back at the lab and wanting to see Nikki. Sounding ridiculously happy, Nikki wanders in with oh! Thats me!. Wellyes. The obnoxious detective is there about Garth. Nikki doesnt know why Garth is dead because he was not allergic to anything, yet he died of an allergic reaction.
The footballer is playing on his computer game thing. Lolly tries to talk to him again. The footballer is still not talking. Lolly looks upset by this. Well, Id be upset if my boyfriend was ignoring me. If I had a boyfriend.
Meanwhile, a man hops on a bus. Apparently, this guy is a bus driver. He finds a dead person upstairs, though seems to think the guy is just asleep. He soon realises that in fact the guy is dead. We saw him in the beginning too he was waiting for a bus. Leo arrives and is told the body had been there overnight. The detective shows him the body. Theres no ID. Leo examines the guys head wound.
Nikki and the obnoxious detective are talking to Helena about Garth. A man and woman look curious. I think perhaps they had something to do with Garths death. The obnoxious detective is obnoxious. Nikki takes swabs of the coffee Garth spilt when he died.
Leo and the detective are watching CCTV footage of the dead man. The man looks drunk as a skunk. A woman tries to get past him; she pushes him when he stands too close to her. The woman gets off; the dead man sleeps. Leo does his autopsy. Apparently, the guy was not as drunk as he looked. Leo does not think his head wound was fatal. Ive hit my head on a bus window before its not fatal, it just hurts a lot. I hit my head on the window of my dads car too, when he went round a bend too fast. I think I may have got concussion or something. But, anyway, basically, you do not die from whacking your head on a bus window, not unless you whack it seriously hard.
Nikki is talking to Helena about Garths allergies. Helena says he didnt have anything. Helena says Garth rocked socks. Not in those words, obviously. But thats the general gist of things. Helena says Garth was going for promotion sales manager. Helena says he wouldve got the job. I smell a motive Apparently, the obnoxious detective smells it too. He wants the names of the others who went for promotion.
Leo still doesnt know who the dead bus guy is. But he does know who the woman is. She is a doctor at the Royal Islington Hospital.
The obnoxious detective is being obnoxious again. Nikki thinks Garth was murdered. The obnoxious detective thinks criminals should die.
Leo and Liam meet up with the woman. They show her a picture of the dead man. She thought he was drunk. She says she pushed him away and he stumbled. She doesnt think he hit his head. She then says he found an empty seat and fell asleep. She seems shocked to find out that the poor guy is dead. Liam thinks shes telling the truth.
Leo re-examines the body. Leo thinks he went into a coma. A diabetic coma, to be precise. Leo then does this icky thing, involving a needle and the dead guys eye. I presume this is a test to find out his blood sugar levels. Its still gross. And the needle makes a squishing noise when it hits his eye. Eww. Anyway, the guy died of a hypoglycaemic episode. Leo says this explains his behaviour. As the detective puts it, he just died. Unfortunate. His name is Martin Davis.
Now were back with the depressed footballer, who is still not dead, but is still depressed. The guys name is Ray. The manager is not happy with his performance. Ray is sent off. The others continue practising. Ray is not happy. Well, he is even unhappier than he was before. Ray goes off to the changing rooms.
Leo and the detective, Liam, go to see Martins secretary, who reported him missing. Martin was a dentist. His dental nurse says she invited him out for a drink after work for her birthday. Martin left his bag behind, which explains why he didnt have chocolate to sort out his blood sugar when he had his episode.
Ray the footballer is still in the changing rooms. Unfortunately, he is now dead in the changing rooms. He appears to have hung himself.
Nikki has her tox reports on Garth. Eye drops killed Garth. Nikki rather likes the obnoxious detective. Well, judging by her comment in Nowhere Fast, she does have pretty poor taste in guys, so perhaps we shouldnt trust her judgement. Anyway, the eye drops that are in Garths stomach are also in Garths coffee. Eye drops are supposed to go in ones eyes, not ones coffee. Nikki rings up the obnoxious detective to tell him about the eye drops. Nikkis hair looks really pretty I love her headband. Nikki says eye drops are usually used as a practical joke apparently, theres an urban myth that if you swallow eye drops, you get the runs. In this case, Garth was allergic to the preservatives and died.
Harry meanwhile is off to see the dead footballer, Ray Treat. Harry says Ray died within the last three hours. Its all consistent with Ray hanging himself. It all looks like suicide.
The obnoxious detective provides Helena with a search warrant. There are a lot of interviews with Garths workmates. Its very cleverly put together. Nikki doesnt think theyll catch the person who did this. The obnoxious detective doesnt think theyll catch the person either.
Harry does Rays autopsy. Harry still thinks Ray killed himself. I concur. Beth, the detective, thinks Ray was very lucky. Leo tells Harry a journalist offered him 5000 to secretly release the pathologists report. Personally, Id take the 5000 and release the report, but Harry says no. He then goes to see Lolly Treat, Rays wife. The manager is also there. Lolly thinks Ray wasnt acting like himself. The manager, Alan, waffles on about media pressure on Lolly and the club. Harry tells Lolly theyll do a tox screen. Alan is obnoxious. God, there are so many obnoxious people in this program!
Harry and Nikki chat. Harry now has the results of the paint of the car that killed Lee. It was an expensive paint job. Harry remembers seeing a car like that. We get a flashback in cool colours of the car Ray drove. Apparently, its the same colour as the paint.
Cut to Leo and the doctor (Jenny Hobart). She tells Leo that Martin did hit his head. Leo tells her he was diabetic. Shes upset that she didnt spot it was a hypo. I think shes guilty. Leo tells her not to be so hard on herself. Hes so nice!
Beth and Harry go to a pub and discuss Rays car. Ray took his own life because he ran over Lee.
Beth goes to see Lolly. Lolly says Ray sold his car. Alan also knew that Ray had sold his car. Beth finds it suspicious that Rays car appears to have disappeared. Beth tells Alan about Lee. Alan doesnt know about any hit and run. Beth tells Alan that Lees mother cant afford a funeral. Alan decides he does know something about a hit and run. Ray was, apparently, from an estate like the one Lee was from. He had trouble adapting and couldnt cope. Which is why he drove his car around the estate and ended up running over Lee, thus causing him to top himself. Harry wants to tell Mrs Hawthorne the truth. Beth says he cant.
Harry goes to see Mrs Hawthorne anyway. Harry tells her Lees death was an accident, but that they cant prove who was driving the car.
Lolly makes a heart-breaking statement about Ray. Its quite cute, actually. We get some nice flashbacks of Ray looking happier and alive. And driving his car. We also see him running over Lee and then looking very depressed. It appears that he told Lolly what happened. Lolly gets rid of Rays car for him. I can understand that she wanted Ray to be remembered as a star footballer, not as a killer. Lolly later goes to Mrs Hawthornes flat and gives her a load of money for Lees funeral. Mrs Hawthorne gives Lee a huge send off. Which is nice, if you like that kind of thing.
Nice piano music plays again. Theres clips of Rays funeral, Janes funeral and some woman receiving some ashes (from what I can work out, this is Laura, Garth Templars wife). A man, who I think killed Garth, receives an email telling him when Garths funeral is. Lolly moves house. Harry leaves flowers for Susan at the side of the road. We also get to see Susan being run over again. My mum still wont watch that bit. I still love the colouring.
Nikki and Leo lurk in Leos office. Harry wanders in. They still havent decided what to do. Nikki keeps a bottle of wine in her desk. So does Leo. Apparently, Harry just drinks ethanol from specimen jars. Amusing. They end up playing poker. Its very sweet. I wish theyd have scenes like that more often. I also wish we could see Harry drinking ethanol from specimen jars.
To summarise:
Theres a lot of cool piano music and some brilliant filming and editing. A kid gets run over. As a result, a footballer commits suicide. A woman dies because she tried to burn down her house to claim on the insurance. An office salesman died because he was the best salesman and its a competitive business. A man dies because he was a diabetic. Harrys new friend, the nice sergeant Susan, gets squished by a bus. Harry, Nikki and Leo all get pissed in Leos office and play poker. And theres a lot of cool colouring.
