Most people associate the name Audubon with art, birds and nature, but few know much about him. In the book "Under A Wild Sky: John James Audubon and the Making of The Birds of America" by William Souder, the life of this complex man comes alive in a highly readable narrative, and I highly recommend it. Appropriately, this letterbox can be found at the Edith Moore Sanctuary, which is part of the Houston Audubon Society.

Directions:

From I10, go south on Sam Houston Pkwy (Beltway 8) Frontage Road for about 1 mile, then turn right (west) on Memorial Drive. Go about 1/2 mile and turn left on Wilchester Blvd. Go about 1/10 mile and turn left into the Edith Moore Sanctuary and park by the cabin.

Clues:

Take the trail east past the cabin and cross the big bridge over Rummel Creek. Immediately after the bridge, turn left and go down steps, across a small bridge, then back up steps. Continue on the trail as it bends right and cross another bridge. From the far side, go 25 steps and look left for a 3 foot rotten stump 5 steps off trail. The letterbox is inside on the back side under bark and leaves. Please re-cover well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
