ZZ Top, that Little Ol' Band From Texas, was formed in 1969 in Houston from rival psychedelic bands, the Moving Sidewalks, featuring guitarist Billy Gibbons, and the American Blues, with bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. The band's first two albums reflected their blues roots and Texas sense of humor as they struggled to build on their success as a local and regional act. Their influences included Jimi Hendrix, Howlin' Wolf and Elvis Presley as they molded themselves into the quintessential Texas boogie band. Their first album came out in 1970, followed by "Rio Grande Mud" in 1972. But their best known album, "Tres Hombres", came out in 1973 and became the first one to go gold with classic songs like "Waitin' For The Bus", "Jesus Just Left Chicago" and their signature riff tune "La Grange". It seemed appropriate, therefore, to place this microbox in the town of La Grange. Since the "Chicken Ranch" no longer exists, I settled for putting it in Monument Hill State Historic Site. Be sure to look for Baby Bear's Black Beans Letterbox in the same park.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
