The group that was to be known as the 13th Floor Elevators formed in late 1965 as a merging of members from two obscure Texas bands. The Lingsmen were a jug-oriented club band that had played with some success in the Port Aransas area, though most members were from Kerrville, and Roky Erickson from Austin, the frontman of the Spades. The Elevators were an instant success in the Austin area and soon produced their first album, "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators", widely regarded as the first psychedelicalbum. Their next album, "Easter Everywhere" was a critical and to some extent commercial success, but soon drug use and personal problems resulted in the group's breakup. This microbox is dedicated to the memory of their unique sound and is located near the birthplace of most members, in Kerrville-Schreiner Park. The park is located along the Guadalupe River, five miles southeast of downtown Kerrville, and offers boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, unsupervised swimming in the river, bird watching, hiking, walking and cycling. Be sure to look for Baby Bear's Park Ranger Letterbox in the same park.

Directions:

From I-10 at Kerrville, go south on Hwy 16 for .3 miles to Loop 534, turn left and go another 4.3 miles to Hwy 173, turn left and a quick right into the park (this is not the park headquarters part of the park). After Entrance Booth, take right at fork and follow the road past a group picnic area on the right to parking for trailhead #1, also on the right.

Clues:

Walk west on the gravel path for about 100 yards until you come to a trail jct. Turn around and go back down the trail the way you came for 15 steps and look right (south) for a multi-trunk cedar tree 5 steps from the trail. The microbox is within the trunks under leaves and rocks. Please re-cover well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
