The Alamo was a 1960 film about the famous battle of The Alamo, starring John Wayne. Though several versions have been made, this is still my favorite. It was filmed in Kinney County because local rancher and businessman James T. "Happy" Shahan convinced John Wayne's Batjac Productions to film The Alamo here. Alamo Village was built for the set and continues to be one of the largest and most complete back lots in the world, hosting over 200 major films. It is a fun place to visit, but to find this letterbox you must go to Fort Clark Springs in town, where John Wayne stayed while filming. It is a great place to visit with much of the fort restored and even a spring-fed swimming pool.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
