From the Rio Grande Valley to Big Bend, there are numerous units that comprise Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which means ‘the doves’ in Spanish. All properties were purchased to provide habitat for White-winged Doves in Texas, but also provide critical habitats for a variety of Valley birds. The Longoria Unit, where this microbox is located, is being improved with walking trails and viewing areas. It is part of the Longoria Loop described on the Lower Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map.

Directions:

From Harlingen, go north on US 77 to FM 2629 in the town of Sebastian. Go west on FM 2629/413 for 2.1 miles, then veer south on FM 506 for approximately 1.5 miles to Las Palomas WMA Longoria Unit on the left. Park by the trailhead sign.

Clues:

From the trail sign head east and continue that direction at first jct after just a few steps. Go about 50 yards to the next jct where you will turn left. Walk 30 steps to just before a bench on the left and a sign on the right saying "Habitat Fragmentation". Turn left and walk 10 steps past the left side of the bench off trail to a small multi-trunk tree a few steps behind a larger multi-trunk tree. The camo microbox is in the crotch about 1 foot high under sticks. Please rehide well.
