The great kiskadee is a member of the flycatcher family. It is about ten inches in length with a black and white striped head, a black bill, bright yellow undersides and crown, a white throat and a brown back and wings. It lives in open woodlands, streamside thickets, groves and orchards, and can be found from extreme southern Texas south to Argentina. The Kingsville area is far enough south to harbor the great kiskadee, and Dick Kleberg Park, where this microbox is located, is one good place to find it. It is part of the Kingsville Loop described on the Central Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. Also nearby is King Ranch, one of the largest working ranches in the United States today, and tours are available. So come to Kingsville for birds, history and letterboxing!
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
