The Lesser Goldfinch is black-backed, with a black crown and white markings on wing and tail, along with its bright yellow underparts. It can be found in many parts of the U.S., but prefers oak savannas, woodlands and suburban gardens. One good place to see it is at the TxDOT Brooks County Rest Area just south of Falfurrias in south Texas. It is part of the Los Ranchos De Tejas Loop described on the Lower Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. It includes a nature trail through a stand of oaks and a pond which attracts an amazing variety of birds. So take a break during your travels in South Texas and come look for the Goldfinch and this microbox.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
