Sam Houston National Forest is located just north of Houston and contains the Lone Star Hiking Trail, Double Lake Recreation Area and Big Creek Scenic Area, which is part of the Trinity Loop described on the Upper Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail map. Birds that can be found here include Louisiana Waterthrushes, Worm-eating Warblers and rare Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Big Creek is also known for dragonflies, and many can be seen near the parking area. So bring your binoculars and spend a day with the birds and bugs.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
