Square Root Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated on days when both the day of the month and the month are the square root of the last two digits of the year. It only happens 9 times per century, so I decided to place a box on this one (3/3/09) since the next one won't occur until 4/4/16. One suggested way of celebrating the holiday is by eating root vegetables cut into shapes with square cross sections (thus creating a "square root"), but I suggest finding this box at the Houston Arboretum.
Directions:
From Loop 610 in Houston go east on Woodway Drive for a short distance and turn right into the Houston Arboretum. Park by the Nature Center.
Clues:
Find the Willow Oak Trail at the east end of the parking lot and go east for about 25 yards to the intersection with the Palmetto Trail. Continue on the Willow Oak Trail for another 100 yards until it dead ends into the Outer Loop Trail. Turn left and walk 8 squared (8x8) steps to a long, dead tree laying on the right perpendicular to the trail. Follow the tree 14 steps off trail to a large pine tree on the right side of the dead tree. Look right for a group of 3 pine trees about 3 squared steps away. The microbox is hanging 4 feet high in a small double-trunk tree just left of the pines. The box is a pill container and is permanently attached to the tree, so remove the top by pushing down while turning counter-clockwise. When replacing the top, make sure to screw it on all the way and check to make sure it doesn't come off if you lift up on it. NOTE: It has been reported that the line broke and the box is wedged in the fork of the tree instead of hanging.
