In the spring of 1895 Frank Jacob Brown and Thomas Hadley Lewis, both Quakers, came to southeast Texas to establish a community dedicated to God. Starting Quaker colonies was a common practice of this religious sect, also called the Religious Society Of Friends. Brown and Lewis came upon 1538 acres of prairie in Northern Galveston County well drained by Clear Creek, Coward's Creek, Mary's Creek, and Chigger Creek, and beautifully framed with dense woods. Feeling this surely was their "Promised Land," they bought the land from Galveston banker J. C. League and named it Friendswood. This microbox is dedicated to those early settlers and can be found at Centennial Park, a place my daughter occasionally plays soccer.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
