Columbus has the distinction of having Texas' Oldest Independence Day Celebration. On July 4, 1826, settlers gathered here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Today, Columbus commemorates that tradition on Independence Day with a free festival featuring a flag ceremony, an Old Time Picnic, games, contests, music and fireworks at Benjamin Beason Park. This site also played a role in Texas’ War for Independence when General Sam Houston and his troops crossed the river near what was then known as Beeson’s Crossing. So bring a picnic and enjoy an Old Time 4th.

Directions:

From Houston, take I10 west to exit 698. Exit and turn left on Hwy 90, then go about 2 miles before turning left into Benjamin Beason Park just before the Colorado River. Park by the stone marker for Beason's Crossing.

Clues:

Walk west on the sidewalk past the picnic pavilion on the left to a stone marker for Ty Probasco. Continue on sidewalk 45 steps to where sidewalk turns right. You turn left (south) and walk on the grass along the brush line for 155 steps to a yellow sign with 203 on it. Continue 43 steps, then turn right and walk 5 steps into a slight opening in the brush to a clump of 5 small trees. Camo minibox is hanging on the back side of the middle tree about 4 feet high. It has a rubber band securing the lid, so bring an extra in case this one is broken, and please rehide well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
