Old Yeller is a 1956 book by Fred Gipson that was later made into a movie of the same name. In the story, young Travis Coates is left to take care of the family ranch in the Texas Hill Country with his mother and younger brother while his father goes off on a cattle drive in the 1860's. When a yellow mongrel comes for an uninvited stay with the family, Travis reluctantly adopts the dog. After a series of scrapes involving raccoons, snakes, bears and all manner of animals, Travis grows to love and respect Old Yeller, who comes to have a profound effect on the boy's life. Even though the story has some sad moments, I highly recommend it for its glimpse into early Texas life and the unique bond between a boy and his dog. Fred Gipson was born on a farm near Mason, and the Mason County Library has a statue dedicated to him out front and a great display of his memorabilia in the lobby. I have placed this microbox here in his honor.

Directions:

The Mason County Library is located at 410 Post Hill Street. From the intersection of Hwy 29 and Hwy 87, go south on Hwy 87 to Westmoreland Street behind the courthouse and turn right (west). Then turn left (south) onto Post Hill Street for .2 mile to the library on the right and park.

Clues:

Go to the statue in front of the library, then walk around behind the library to a walking track. Go to the northeast corner of the track and look for 2 Crepe Myrtle trees, one behind the other, the first being about 10 steps from the track. The camo microbox is within its trunk under a rock and leaves. Please re-cover well and be discreet.
