The beautiful "Lost Pines of Texas" bring visitors back to Bastrop State Park year after year. The loblolly pine woodland is isolated from the main body of East Texas Pines by approximately 100 miles of rolling, post oak woodlands. This pine-oak woodland covers approximately seventy square miles and is part of the most westerly stand of loblolly pines in the state. A quiet woodland and rugged hills make this park one of the most beautiful in Texas. Entry fee is $3.00 per adult and camping is available. So come to Bastrop and look for the Lost Loblolly and Baby Bear's Poison Ivy Letterboxes, along with the O-Knots Series.

Directions:

Bastrop State Park is one mile east of Bastrop on Texas 21, also accessible from the east on Texas 71 or by way of Buescher State Park along Park Road 1. Pick up a map as you enter the park and find the Lost Pines Hiking Trail by going east from the Headquarters to the intersection, turn right and follow the loop road around to the hiking trailhead across from the Copperas Campground. You will need to drive a little further to park on the left and walk back to the trail. On the map it does not label the trail as Lost Pines, but shows the Scout Campground on the trail.

Clues:

Follow the 8.2 mile Lost Pines Trail for .6 miles to a trail junction sign. You will pass the Scout Camping Area. Go right to find Baby Bear's box, go left (northwest) for this one. You will walk 60 steps from the sign, then turn left (southwest) and walk 17 steps off-trail to a long, downed tree. Go to the far side of its trunk (left side) and look for the box under some dead bark. Please re-cover well.
