Though Texas is not generally known as a backpacking destination, it does have one National Recreation Trail, the Lone Star Trail. This 128-mile trail extends from near the town of Richards east to just outside Cleveland, passing through the Sam Houston National Forest. It may be hiked year round, but winter and spring are the most popular seasons due to the mild southeast Texas climate. Usually the trail is not crowded, and hikers may observe a multiple-use managed forest with many ages and kinds of trees, plants and wildlife. There are also many parking areas where roads cross the trail, allowing you to hike portions of it at a time instead of the whole thing at once. So get out there and become a Lone Star hiker! This box contains a different stamp than the original Lone Star Hiker one that went missing and is in a new location, so consider it a new box. Also on the trail is Baby Bear's Chop Chop letterbox and Wanda's Lone Star Start letterbox.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
