Dan Blocker was born on December 10, 1928, in DeKalb, Texas, the largest baby ever born in Bowie County (14 pounds). When he was six years old the family moved to O'Donnell, in West Texas, and he eventually attended Sul Ross University in Alpine. He was always big, standing over six feet and weighing 200 pounds as a youth of twelve and eventually growing to 6'4" and weighing 300 pounds. At college, Blocker became interested in acting and in 1959 he was cast in the role of "Hoss" Cartwright on the NBC television show Bonanza. Blocker was an enormously popular actor and he played the role of Hoss for thirteen seasons until his death on May 13, 1972, from complications following an operation. Dan was buried in Woodmen Cemetery, and you can visit him, and this microbox there.
