The "Father Of Texas" is Stephen F. Austin because in 1821 he settled the first Anglo-American families in Texas. The San Felipe State Historic Site is located where he brought the first 300 families to colonize Texas under a contract with the Mexican Government. It has a large statue of Austin, as well as a replica of his only home in Texas, an original well dug by his colony, and the J.J. Josey General Store. This box is in a different location and has a different stamp than the first box that went missing, so consider it a new Find. Look for Baby Bear's Old 300 letterbox located here since 2002.

Directions:

San Felipe SHS may be reached by traveling west from Houston on I10 about 50 miles (just before Sealy). Turn right (north) at exit #723 on FM 1458 and go about 2.5 miles. The park will be on the left.

Clues:

Go through the gate and look at the monument and statue, then walk about 100 yards west past the museum to the replica of Austin's cabin. Just 7 steps from the right (north) side of the cabin is a multi-trunk bush with a large stump in the middle. The letterbox is within the stump under bark and grass. Please re-cover well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
