In August, 1804, Lewis and Clark entered the area now known as South Dakota. They traveled upriver past today's towns of Yankton, Chamberlain and Pierre. On September 24 they passed the current site of Farm Island State Recreation Area, where they picked up fresh elk meat and prepared gifts for the Teton chiefs they would soon meet at the mouth of the Bad River in present Fort Pierre. The confrontation with the Teton Indians degenerated into a nearly disastrous quarrel but was defused by chief Black Buffalo. Today, Farm Island is an inviting nature preserve where you can get a sense of how things looked along the river in 1804. Hiking, bird watching and camping are just some of the activities enjoyed here, along with looking for this letterbox.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
